The Three Wisemen
Matthew 2:1-2
In the ancient land of Israel, under the reign of King Herod, the city of Bethlehem lay silent under a brilliant night sky. Far away in the East, wise men, known as Magi, studied the heavens, their sharp eyes discovering a new star shining with amazing brightness. Believing the star to be a special sign, they set out on a journey to the distant land of Israel, seeking the one born to be the king of the Jews.
Matthew 2:3-6
Upon arriving in Jerusalem, the wisemen asked about the location of the newborn king. Their question worried King Herod and the people of the city, because they knew nothing of such a child. Herod gathered the priests and teachers of the law, looking for an answer in ancient prophecies. The prophecy revealed that the news was true, and the special child was to be born in the small town of Bethlehem.
Matthew 2:7-8
King Herod, hiding a secret plan, invited the wisemen to a meeting in his royal palace. He asked them to search for the child and tell him where the child was so that he, too, could worship the newborn king. Little did the three wisemen know that Herod's real plan wasn't to worship the child, but to get rid of him, because Herod saw Jesus as a threat to his own power.
Matthew 2:9-10
The wisemen left Jerusalem, following the narrow streets filled with merchants, playing children, and the sounds of wagons and carts. As they journeyed through the hot desert, with the sun beating down upon them, they kept their focus on the guiding star. Their camels' hooves stirred up dust, and they could feel the heat and exhaustion, but their faith never wavered. Guided by the bright star that had led them so far, they pressed on. As the star came to rest over the place where the child lay, their hearts filled with joy and excitement.
Matthew 2:11
Entering the simple stable, the three wisemen found the child, Jesus, cradled in his mother Mary's arms. The air was filled with the smell of hay and the sounds of animals shuffling. They marveled at the sight of the newborn king in such a humble setting, yet they could sense the presence of God. Overwhelmed with respect, they knelt before the baby king, presenting him with precious gifts: glittering gold coins, showing that Jesus is King; sweet-smelling frankincense, because Jesus is God; and a small box filled with an ancient medicine called myrrh, telling us that Jesus would also be our Savior.
Matthew 2:12
Before the wisemen could return to King Herod, they received a warning in a dream not to tell the child's location. Listening to the divine message, they returned to their homeland by another way, avoiding Herod's dangerous plan.
Their faith and determination led them to the humble beginnings of the Messiah, setting the stage for the incredible life and teachings of Jesus.
